State the question the opening must answer
Sometimes a designer or specialist needs information behind a finish before the final renovation scope can be settled. That is different from authorising the entire room to be stripped. Ask the responsible professional to define the investigation question, location and limits. A demolition enquiry should not silently become a diagnostic service.
Resolve conditions before opening
The responsible professionals must consider services, structure and suspect materials before a finish is disturbed. Existing survey limitations still apply. Do not open a wall yourself to improve the estimate or assume a small opening carries no risk. Record what information must be available before the proposed investigation can proceed.
Arrange interpretation and temporary closure
Identify who needs to attend or review the findings, and who decides the next step. Also ask who is responsible for any temporary condition or making good after investigation. Removal of a finish does not itself diagnose the concealed issue or determine how it should be repaired.
Issue a separate instruction for wider work
Use the findings to revise the wall and ceiling markup. Keep broader removal pending until its limits and dependencies are agreed. If the investigation reveals an unexpected condition, retain the original question and the condition record rather than treating the opening as permission to keep going.
Questions to settle before the next step
Use this decision table with the people responsible for your property. Record the actual answers in your private project file.
| Decision | Question or evidence | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Question | What must the investigator establish? | Responsible professional defines |
| Opening | Location, limits and prerequisites | Separate assessed instruction |
| Next step | Who interprets and authorises further work? | Record new scope separately |
Keep your completed record private. Bring the relevant scope questions into the optional project planner or discuss them directly with Clearpath.
